September 26th was Johnny Appleseed day. Our class along with our CAPS cheerleader friends celebrated a little late today with some math and literacy activities about Johnny Appleseed and his accomplishments. We learned that Johnny was actually named John Chapman and that he was a good citizen in his community who cared about other people's well being.

Mathematicians
We are tackling some difficult topics in math this week and the students have been working like rock stars! All students have been working on solving both take apart and put together word problems. On Thursday, we expanded our thinking to include word problems that ask us to compare numbers. You can see in the picture that students can solve word problems using multiple strategies. They think like mathematicians and make their own choices about their strategies! We love to talk about math and share our thinking!

Indoor Recess
We had our first indoor recess this week. The kids did such a great job using indoor voices, playing with one another, and picking up their toys and games.
Science Investigations
We have started our first unit of Science: What Materials Are Made Of. In these investigations, 2nd graders are talking about how to classify different objects by their properties.
Back to School
The first week of school was full of learning new routines, building classroom community, and learning about one another. We are getting into the groove of 2nd grade now, but here is a look back at our first week of school. It is always fun to compare the beginning of the year to end of the year pictures to see how much these 2nd graders grow!
